VFS Portugal Application Process for US Applicants
Treat the application as a sequence of different tasks—not a single booking. This guide helps US residence-visa applicants organize the journey from the right checklist to the consular decision and the post-arrival stage.

Planning information, not legal advice or an official checklist. Requirements and individual instructions can change.
1. Confirm the category and jurisdiction
Start with the VFS Portugal US national-visa instructions and the office responsible for your place of residence. Do not select a centre solely because it is nearby or has an earlier slot.
For the Washington jurisdiction, the Embassy's visa-information page lists current centres and category-specific documents. Its current category numbering calls remote-work residence D9; this site retains the commonly searched “D8 digital nomad” name. Choose by the full purpose of stay, not the number alone.
2. Build a file against the official checklist
Save the checklist edition and the date you checked it. Organize identity, residence, income and other route-specific evidence. Keep a list of missing items and questions instead of treating a partially completed file as ready to submit.
Use the US applicant document-preparation checklist alongside the official instructions. For criminal-record preparation, follow the FBI record and federal apostille guide. Check the record-age rules against your intended submission date.
Choose document services deliberately
Order official records through their issuing authority or a suitable authorized route. Before choosing a fingerprint, translation or apostille provider, ask what it will deliver, which charges are official, what is additional and which delivery dates are estimates.
We do not rank vendors here or imply that a paid intermediary controls official processing. Compare quotes using the application-cost worksheet.
3. Follow the official booking instructions
Use the booking route linked by VFS or your consular office. Confirm the applicant details, category, centre and appointment instructions before finalizing your plans. Slot availability can change; no date is guaranteed until the provider confirms it.
Do not assume a walk-in exception for another category applies to your case, or that an appointment at a different jurisdiction will be accepted. Avoid paying anyone who claims guaranteed approval or privileged access without verifiable authority.
Where will you submit?
The Embassy in Washington lists Chicago, Houston, Miami and Washington DC under its responsibility. Other US consular jurisdictions have their own arrangements. Confirm the location and address in your appointment instructions before travelling.
Use our consulates hub and VFS location guide for orientation, then verify against the Embassy's current list. A centre being listed is not confirmation that GetFastVisa serves that location.
4. Check the file before submission day
- Recheck document dates after any appointment change.
- Match names and applicant details across forms and supporting records.
- Confirm originals, copies and any legalization or translation instructions.
- Verify the accepted payment method and separate visa/VFS charges.
- Keep your own copies and a record of any outstanding requests.
Submitting every listed document does not guarantee approval. Raise unresolved questions with the relevant office or adviser before making commitments.
5. Track separate stages, not a promised end date
- Preparation: obtain and check the required evidence.
- Appointment: submit through the instructed route and retain the confirmation or receipt.
- Consular review: monitor the contact channel specified for your file and respond to requests.
- After the decision: follow the visa and entry instructions if approved.
- Residence-permit stage: confirm the applicable AIMA procedure and documents separately.
A visa appointment is not a residence-permit appointment. Official deadlines and published provider estimates are not a guarantee for your end-to-end moving plan. Check current national-visa processing instructions and avoid non-refundable travel commitments based only on a sales estimate.
Keep a simple application log
Use columns for task, owner, document issue date, expected response, actual response and next action. Record which office gave each instruction. This is an organizational suggestion, not a claim that a spreadsheet improves your approval odds.
Do not place passport details or criminal-record documents in public notes or unsecured shared links. Use the secure channels specified by the relevant authority or your provider.
Decide what help you need
You can follow the official process yourself. If you want administrative help, compare the written scope: document preparation, appointment assistance, follow-up and post-arrival guidance. Ask which tasks and fees remain yours.
Legal eligibility, adverse-record issues and representation require a qualified lawyer. GetFastVisa is not a law firm.
Understand support fees before choosing a service
GetFastVisa's published fee is €1,800 per adult and €500 per dependent under 18, plus applicable VAT. Official charges and other third-party costs are separate. Check the household service-fee estimator and cost categories.
Read the service terms and refund conditions. Administrative support does not guarantee appointment speed, visa approval or a citizenship timeline.
Talk through your preparation plan
Bring your questions about documents, timing and service scope. Do not send passport scans or criminal records through a public form.
