D7 vs D8 visa Portugal: start with your income source

For US applicants, the useful distinction is how you earn—not which visa sounds cheaper. Compare the evidence behind pension or passive income with the evidence behind remote employment or services.

The short answer

The D7 route is associated with pensioners and people living on their own income. The D8 residence route is for remote work. Someone with a pension and consulting work should not choose solely by comparing headline income thresholds: the whole application needs review.

D7: organize the evidence behind your pension or own income

The official D7 checklist addresses pensions, property and investment income, availability in Portugal, and financial resources. A bank balance and a recurring income stream answer different questions; do not treat savings as an automatic substitute for income evidence.

For your preparation file, list each income source, who receives it, how often it arrives and which records explain it. Flag one-off transfers or uncertain future payments for review. Explore the D7 route guide for wider context.

D8: document the work relationship and recent earnings

The D8 residence checklist distinguishes employment and self-employment evidence. It asks for average monthly earnings over the preceding three months at four times the Portuguese monthly minimum wage, plus a US tax-residence certificate.

The government set the 2026 minimum wage at €920. Applying the checklist multiplier gives €3,680 per month. This calculation is a reference for that earnings requirement, not an approval decision or a complete household budget.

Prepare questions about variable earnings, several clients, company turnover versus personal earnings, and any work arrangements that may change after moving. See the D8 route guide; obtain professional advice for employment or tax questions.

Bring an evidence map—not just a headline number

  • List the source and recipient of each income stream.
  • Match statements to the relevant contract, pension record or source document.
  • Identify gaps, currency differences and one-off payments.
  • Keep application expenses separate from funds you may need to demonstrate.

This is a preparation method, not an official list of accepted documents. Follow your route's checklist and individual instructions. Use the US document-preparation checklist to organize the rest of the file.

Plan the household, then confirm each application

Confirm the applicable route for every accompanying person before planning a shared move. Relationship evidence, financial resources and application procedures need individual checking. Do not assume one adult's visa automatically covers a partner or child.

The household estimate in our visa-cost guide calculates optional GetFastVisa support fees only. It does not calculate dependent eligibility or the funds a consulate will require.

Compare preparation effort and costs, not promised speed

Separate document collection, the visa appointment, the consular decision and the residence-permit stage. Check the VFS national-visa instructions for the process applicable to you. Appointment supply, extra evidence requests and official processing are outside a support provider's control.

Use the VFS application guide for the submission journey and the application-cost worksheet for fees and document expenses. A lower headline income threshold does not mean a lower total moving cost.

Avoid these decision shortcuts

  • Choosing D7 because it appears cheaper while relying on remote-work earnings.
  • Presenting a company revenue figure as though it were documented personal income.
  • Assuming a visa guarantees a tax benefit or a citizenship timetable.
  • Using a temporary-stay checklist for a residence application.

Visa choice is not a nationality or tax ruling. Those rules have separate conditions and can change. Get qualified advice for long-term legal planning.

Your next three steps

  1. Identify your income source and unresolved questions.
  2. Build your document-preparation list.
  3. Separate fees from your living budget.

Discuss your application questions

Use the preliminary eligibility questionnaire as a starting point, not a consular decision. Or book a free consultation to discuss your evidence and the administrative support available.

Talk through your preparation plan

Bring your questions about documents, timing and service scope. Do not send passport scans or criminal records through a public form.
