Portugal Visa Document Checklist for US Applicants

Build an organized application file before you book, order documents or pay for services. This planner focuses on D7 and D8 residence-visa preparation from the United States, not short-stay tourism.

Planning information, not legal advice or an official checklist. Requirements and individual instructions can change.

Start with the official checklist for your route

VFS publishes separate US checklists for pensioners and people living on their own income (D7 PDF) and remote workers (D8 residence-visa PDF). Both linked editions are dated 6 November 2025 and were still linked from the VFS US page when checked on 5 September 2026. Check for a replacement before applying.

Use the VFS national-visa instructions and jurisdiction links to confirm your application location. Your consulate may request additional evidence. Our organizer does not replace its instructions.

Still deciding? Compare the D7 and D8 evidence requirements before assembling a route-specific file.

Your preparation checklist

Use this as a task organizer alongside the official checklist. Tick a task only after you have checked the relevant instructions. No documents or answers are uploaded; ticks reset when you reload.

0 of 10 preparation tasks checked — not an eligibility or approval score.

What changes between D7 and D8?

D7: pension or own-income evidence

The checklist distinguishes pension evidence from income generated by property or investments, and addresses availability of funds in Portugal. Review the specific-document section.

D8: remote-work evidence

Prepare the work relationship or service evidence, recent earnings and US tax-residence certificate requested by the remote-work residence checklist. A temporary-stay remote-work application has a different checklist.

For your own working file, make a simple index: document name, issuing organization, issue date, person covered, translation/legalization question and missing action. Do not assume savings, turnover and personal income are interchangeable.

Time-sensitive documents: work backwards from submission

The linked US checklists specify criminal-record documents issued less than 90 days before submission and an apostilled FBI record where the applicant has lived in the US for over a year. Confirm which countries' records apply to your history. The apostille and the underlying record are separate steps.

Our FBI background-check and apostille guide explains the issuing authorities. Put document issue dates beside your target submission date and recheck if the appointment changes. Do not rely on a vendor's delivery estimate as a guaranteed visa timeline.

Questions to resolve before spending money

  • Does your route and location accept the evidence you intend to submit?
  • Which records need originals, certification, legalization or translation?
  • Who is responsible for each applicant's file and outstanding requests?
  • Can you change or cancel accommodation and travel if the plan changes?
  • Have you budgeted third-party charges separately from optional support?

Continue to the visa-cost planner or the VFS submission guide. If a record contains adverse entries or your eligibility is uncertain, consult a qualified immigration lawyer before committing.
